Microfluidics, Nanomaterials, and Point-of-Care in Healthcare for developing countries

Vietnam is a rapidly developing and socially dynamic country. The average income of people in rural areas—occupying 67% of Vietnam’s population— is under USD $19 per month. The government spending for the healthcare is currently set at only 7-8% of GDP. Hence, a large number of people in Vietnam, especially the low income populations in rural and remote regions, are unaffordable for healthcare services. Such populations have been suffering from health conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, and infections due the limited access to health check-ups and timely treatments. There are lots of emerging needs and considerably growing interest in development of medical products in Vietnam.

This workshop is funded by British Council Newton Fund Researcher Links – Workshop Grant. The aim of the workshop is to establish Microfluidics, nanomaterials, and Point-of-Care networks and stimulate collaborations about research and development (R&D), technology transfer, and commercialization of R&D results between UK and Vietnam, to improve health outcomes of underserved populations who are inadequately provided with a healthcare service or facility, and who are not able to access to the good healthcare services in Vietnam in particular and in the developing countries in general.

The workshop is organized along with the international conference on the 7th International Conference on the Development of Biomedical Engineering in VietnamThe workshop will integrate a broad range of experts from VN governmental organizations who establish and implement public’s healthcare programs, from national and international research communities who have been involved in developing Lab-on-a-chip, Nanomaterials and Point-of-Care technologies, and from entrepreneurial ventures who engage in facilitating and commercialization the final products to enhance the accessibility of the advancements in healthcare for low income populations.

Concretely, the following are the expected outcomes and potential collaborations:

(1) Establishing a collaboration network of scientists and experts from both Vietnam and UK in the fields of microfluidics, lab-on-chip, nanomaterials, point-of-care technologies

(2) Providing opportunities for UK scientists to come to Vietnam to investigate research
topics that are proper for Vietnam and developing countries

(3) Providing Vietnamese scientists to learn new UK technologies and approaches

(4) Technology transfer and collaborations about microfluidic product developments between Vietnam and UK: R&D projects, commercialization, visiting scholar programmes, joint-development of research proposals.
